Etymology

From paš (a form of pats “self”) +‎ skan(ēt) (to sound). A calque of (deprecated template usage) [etyl] German Selbstlaut (vowel), it was coined by A. Kronvalds in the 1860s and later changed by him to its modern form patskanis.[1]
