From Proto-Slavic *pьkъlъ, from Proto-Indo-European *pik- ‎(pitch). Cognate with Bulgarian пъкъл ‎(pǎkǎl), Slovene pekel, Russian пекло ‎(peklo), Slovak peklo. Akin to Latin pix ‎(pitch, tar).
