Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Finnic *peijeh + -as, either from Proto-Indo-Iranian *paHiyas (“libation[1]”) or from Proto-Germanic *faigijaz (“fey, doomed to die”), compare Old Norse feigr (“near to death”). Cognate with Estonian peied (“wake”).
