[edit]Shortened from a hypothetical *pocohaacan, possibly derived from Proto-Algonquian *po·xkw- ("break, cut") + *-a·kani, a suffix denoting tools also found in tamahaac, taccahacan ("hatchet"), the source for English tomahawk.
