An alteration of Middle Irish potecaire (assimilated to the suffix -éir), from Old French apotecaire, from Medieval Latin apothēcārius (storekeeper), from Latin apothēca (repository, storehouse, warehouse), from Ancient Greek ἀποθήκη (apothḗkē, a repository, storehouse).
