From Old Galician and Old Galician-Portuguese (the derivative preguiçoso is already attested in the Cantigas de Santa Maria, 13th century), from Latin pīgritia. Cognate with Portuguese preguiça, Italian pigrizia, Spanish pereza, French paresse.
