  1. (transitive, intransitive) to pass (by), go beyond
    Departinte ante ni, la amiki arivis pos ni; nam ni rajuntis li e preteriris li.
    Having departed before us, our friends arrived after us; for we overtook them and passed them by.
  2. (intransitive, figuratively) to overreach

Usage notes

Preterirar is used when the subject goes past an object that stands still, but devancar indicates that the object moves as well, and moves in the same direction as the subject.
