Old French

Etymology

From earlier prevoire, from Vulgar Latin *previterum, *prebiterum, from Latin presbyterum, accusative of presbyter (cf. the synonym prestre derived from the nominative form). Compare Occitan preveire.

Noun

provoire oblique singularm (oblique plural provoires, nominative singular provoires, nominative plural provoire)

  1. priest

Usage notes

According to some sources, prestre and provoire are inflected forms of the same word. This is however unlikely, as the two rarely appear in texts together
