Etymology

From pták (bird) +‎ -o- +‎ pysk (lip). Calque of translingual Ornithorhynchus,[1] from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Ancient Greek ὄρνιθ- (órnith-) (the stem of ὄρνις (órnis, bird)) + ῥύγχος (rhúnkhos, snout); coined by Jan Svatopluk Presl (1791–1849).
