[edit]Inherited from Chagatai قلای (qalay, “how”). Related to Karachay-Balkar къалай (qalay), Kyrgyz кандай (kanday), Kazakh қалай (qalai), Uyghur قانداق (qandaq), Tuvan кандыг (kandıg), and Yakut хайдах (qaydaq).
Ultimately from Proto-Turkic *ka- (“interrogative stem”) + *-lig (“adjectival suffix”)
