Etymology

From Proto-East Cushitic *ḳawʕ- (sound of thunder). Cognate with Orma qawwe, Konso Qawweeta (Amhara), Somali qaw (loud noise), qac (sound of breaking), Saho awac (approaching storm), Burji qa'wee, Gedeo qawh (Amhara), Sidamo qawwe, Tsamai q'awa (rifle). The Amhara are referred to as such on account of their rifles.
