Uncertain. Related to or derived from Latin cēpa (likely borrowed through Vulgar Latin; compare Romanian ceapă), or Ancient Greek κάπια (kápia, onions). Compare with Gheg kepë (onion(s)), which preserved the original /k/-sound.
