From Proto-Finno-Ugric *repä, likely a loan from Proto-Indo-Iranian *reupōśo-. Compare Persian روباه ‎(rubâh, fox) and Avestan [script needed] ‎(urupi-, certain breed of dog). Cognate of Finnish repo and Veps reboi.
