From a (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Vulgar Latin root *reexcaptāre, from Latin captāre, present active infinitive of captō. Compare Italian ricattare (to blackmail), Catalan and Spanish rescatar (to rescue), Portuguese resgatar (to rescue).
