[edit]From Proto-Finnic *riutta, borrowed from Proto-Norse *ᚷᚱᛖᚢᛏᚨ (*greuta), from Proto-Germanic *greutą (“grit, gravel, sand”), compare with Old Norse grjót (“coarse stones, rubble”).
