Alternatively from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Albanian *reipa, to be connected with Proto-Germanic *raipaz (rope), in (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old High German reif (rope, cord), Middle Low German rēp (sling, rope), Old Norse reipa (to fasten with a rope), and ultimately from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *roypnós.
