Etymology

rutten +‎ -a, Old Swedish rutna, rotna, same as Danish rådne, Norwegian Bokmål råtne, Icelandic rotna. The adjective rutten (rotten) originated as the past participle of a different verb than this one, one of strong conjugation. Both verbs ultimately relate to röta (rot). From Old Norse rotna.
