Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *sǫdì, *sǫdьji, from Proto-Indo-European *som-dʰh₁-ih₁, from *som- + *dʰeh₁- + *-ih₁. Cognate with Lithuanian samdà (rent), samdýti (to hire), Sanskrit सम्धि (samdhí, connection, treaty, peace).
