German

Etymology

This word entered standard German alongside sabbeln from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] German Low German, (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Dutch Low Saxon. Subsequently, the meaning of this term shifted; sabbeln retains the original meaning, "dool". Compare southern Dutch zabberen, standard Dutch sabbelen. The nouns Sabber and Sabbel are also closely related.
