[edit]From schalott, influenced by German to -en-[1] and suffixed with lök (“onion, bulb”). Borrowed from French échalote, ultimately from the town Ashkelon. First attested in 1754.[2]
Cognate with Danish chalotteløg, skalotteløg, charlotteløg, Norwegian sjalottløk, and German schalottenlauch.
