From Middle Dutch schure, schuur, from Old Dutch *scūr, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *skūrō. Cognate with English shower (Middle English shour, Old English scūr), German Schauer (Old High German scūr), Danish and Swedish skur (Old Norse skúr).
