From Proto-Germanic *skeutaną, whence also Old Saxon skiotan, Old English scēotan, Old Norse skjóta, Gothic 𐍃𐌺𐌹𐌿𐍄𐌰𐌽 (skiutan). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewd-.
