Etymology[edit]
From Latin sulfur, sulphur (probably through a Vulgar Latin form *sclufur), from Proto-Indo-European *swelplos, from the root *swel- (“to burn, smoulder”). The Romanian equivalent in this case (sulfur) is a learned borrowing.
