From Old Galician-Portuguese semellar, from Vulgar Latin *similiāre, from Late Latin similāre, present active infinitive of similō, from Latin similis (“similar”). Cognate with Galician semellar, Portuguese similar, assemelhar, Spanish semejar, Catalan semblar, Occitan semblar, French sembler, Italian somigliare and Romanian semăna.
