Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *svętъ, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱwen- (holy), compare Serbo-Croatian svȇt. Influenced by the earlier form sânt (from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin sānctus), which it largely replaced.
