Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Albanian *štanga, from Proto-Indo-European *st(y)oy-. Compare Sanskrit styāyate ‘it hardens’, Ancient Greek στῖον ‎(stîon, pebble), Russian стена ‎(stená, wall), Old English stān 'stone'. Alternatively cognate to Old Norse stinga ‎(to put, to stick), Lithuanian sténgiu, sténgti ‎(to be able), stingt ‎(it hardens)[1].
