Etymology

From Proto-Turkic *sïčgan. Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰽𐰲𐰍𐰭 (sïčgan, mouse). The disharmonic vowel /i/ is probably a later replacement of an older /ı/ caused by the desire to avoid connection with sıçmaq (to shit), compare Turkish sıçan. The colloquial pronunciation retains /ı/.

Noun

siçan (definite accusative siçannı, plural siçanlar)

  1. mouse
