Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Proto-Turkic *sïčgan. Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰽𐰲𐰍𐰭 (sïčgan, “mouse”). The disharmonic vowel /i/ is probably a later replacement of an older /ı/ caused by the desire to avoid connection with sıçmaq (“to shit”), compare Turkish sıçan. The colloquial pronunciation retains /ı/.
The computing sense is a semantic loan from English mouse.
