Etymology 1

Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *ksew- (to shave, scrape), with metathesis;[1][2] in this case, cognate with Ancient Greek ξύω (xúō, to shave), Latin saucius (hurt, wounded), and Sanskrit क्षुर (kṣurá, razor). Alternatively, from a Proto-Indo-European *skewt- (to cut);[3] compare Irish scaitheamh (a spell (indefinite period of time)).
