Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic съметана (sŭmetana), from Proto-Slavic *sъmetana; possibly an early borrowing to explain for the vowel sound change before nasals. The "n" can be explained by the influence of *sъmęsti. Compare Bulgarian сметана (smetana), Russian сметана (smetana).
