Etymology

From Latin sōlitārius (lonely)[1]. Compare (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Portuguese solteiro, Catalan solter. See also the borrowed doublet solitario. Another theory, perhaps less likely, derives it from suelto, from Latin solutus (unbound, released, free, at large)[2].
