Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. Possibly from a conflation of Latin exfricare and extricare. Cfr. e.g. Italian sfregare and Romanian strica. Compare, for more, the variations of sciarra > strarria, sfurnari > sciurnari, sfirruzzu > scirruzzu. Compare, for a similar conflation, Latin salvare~servare > Sicilian sarbari.
