Etymology[edit]

Possibly from a Vulgar Latin root *styphus, from Late Latin stypa + typhe, from Ancient Greek τύφη (túphē), or possibly related to tufă and contaminated with stypa. It may also simply be from tufă with an initial expressive -s-. Not related to Hebrew סוּף (súf).
