Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Germanic *swerką / *gaswerką. Related to Old English ġesweorc (cloud, mist, smoke). Also related to Old Frisian swerka and Old English sweorcan (to become dark, obscured, gloomy), from *swerkaną.
