Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Old Norse tæra, from Middle Low German teren. Compare Icelandic and Norwegian Nynorsk tæra.
Verb[edit]
tära (present tär, preterite tärde, supine tärt, imperative tär)
- (transitively with på) to wear on (so as to (slowly) reduce or make weaker)
- Sjukdomen tärde på honom
- The disease wore on him
- Han verkade tärd av sjukdomen
- The disease seemed to have worn on him
- Elräkningarna tärde på deras ekonomin
- The electricity bills wore on their finances
- Det tär på krafterna att tvingas arbeta övertid
- Being forced to work overtime wears down your energy
- (archaic) to eat
Usage notes[edit]
"Eat away at" works decently too (though "wear on" feels a bit closer), corresponding to the second sense.
