Of Proto-Indo-European origin. Cognate with Old Armenian տաւն ‎(tawn, feast), Latin daps ‎(sacrificial feast), Ancient Greek δαπάνη ‎(dapánē, expenditure), δάπτω ‎(dáptō, I devour).
