First attested in the Talang Tuo inscription, 684AD. From Proto-Malayic *tanəm (compare Indonesian tanam), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *tanəm (compare Cebuano tanum (plant), Chamorro tanom, Samoan tanu), from Proto-Austronesian *CaNəm (grave, to bury) (compare Amis tadem).
