From Ottoman Turkish طاوق (tavuq, “hen, fowl”), from earlier *taɣuq/*taquq, from Common Turkic *taqïɣu (“hen, fowl”), from Proto-Turkic *tiakïgu (“hen, fowl”). Cognate with Chuvash чӑх (čăh, “hen”), Old Uyghur tʾqyγw (taqïɣu, “fowl, hen”), Karakhanid تَقاغُو (taqāɣū, “domestic fowl”).
