Etymology[edit]

From Ottoman Turkish تفرقه (tefrika, dividing into sections; discord), from Arabic تَفْرِقَة (tafriqa), verbal noun of فَرَّقَ (farraqa, to separate). The publishing or literary sense appeared in the 19th century and the older senses are obsolete in modern Turkish.
