Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Old Tupi teîú (tegu).[1]

Pronunciation

[edit]

  • Rhymes: -u
  • Hyphenation: tei‧ú

Noun

[edit]

teiú m (plural teiús)

  1. (Brazil) tegu (any lizard in the genera Tupinambis or Salvator)
    Synonym: jacuraru
    • 1913, José de Alencar, “O combate nupcial”, in Ubirajara:
Na véspera, o pajé burnira de novo com a folha da sambaiba o toro de madeira, e o esfregara com a banha do teiú, para que ele escorregasse da mão do guerreiro como o lagarto da mão do caçador.
The day before, the shaman had once more burnished with the sandpaper leaf the tree trunk, and had rubbed it with tegu fat, so that it would slip from the warrior's hand as a lizard slips from the hunter's hand.
