Borrowed from Middle Low German telt (tent). Compare German Zelt. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *del- (split, cut), whence Proto-Germanic *teldą. From the same Proto-Indo-European source Latvian dalīt (divide), deldēt (wear out).[1]
