Maltese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Arabic طاقة (ṭāqa, window), from طاق (ṭāq, arch, doorway), from Middle Persian tʾg (tāg, arch). The form tieqa instead of *taqa probably goes back to a variant *تاقة (*tāqa), in which the initial had been dissimilated against the q; compare dejjaq and others. Compare also Moroccan Arabic تاقة (tāqa) alongside طاقة (ṭāqa).
