From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle English unwitti (“foolish”), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old English unwittiġ (“unconscious, ignorant, stupid”), equivalent to un- + witty. Cognate with German unwitzig (“unwitty”), Icelandic úvitugr (“ignorant”).
