From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle English unwitti (foolish), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old English unwittiġ (unconscious, ignorant, stupid), equivalent to un- +‎ witty. Cognate with German unwitzig (unwitty), Icelandic úvitugr (ignorant).
