Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Albanian *awena, an innovation based on *au̯e 'down, off' (cf. Sanskrit अव ‎(áva, id)), replacing Proto-Indo-European *dhē 'to place, put'. The original meaning must have been 'to put down, to put aside', as in Latin pōnere ‎(to put)[1].
