From Proto-Nuristani *wāsī (due to the absence of a final vowel), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hwā́siH (dwelling, staying), feminine of *Hwāsás, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wes- (to stay). Compare Sanskrit वास (vāsá, dwelling, staying).
