From Middle English vengen, from Old French venger, from Latin vindicare (“to avenge, vindicate”).

1. (obsolete, transitive) To avenge; to punish; to revenge.
   • c. 1387, Geoffrey Chaucer, Canterbury Tales‎^[1], Tale of Melibee § 30:

     For right as they han venged hem on me and doon me wrong, right so shal I venge me upon hem and doon hem wrong;

   • c. 1595, William Shakespeare, Richard II‎^[2], Act 1, scene 2:

     To safeguard thine own life / The best way is to venge my Gloucester's death.
