Etymology

Since 1689 from the dialectal word vicka (“yield; bend sideways; run in a waddling fashion”). Most likely related to veck (“a fold; a crease”) and vika (“to fold”).

   She wiggled her toes.

   If you move this lid up and down long enough, it will break (off).

2. (colloquial) act as substitute, stand-in, temporarily fill the position of; short for vikariera

   Hon vickade som lärare förra året.

   She worked as a substitute teacher last year.
