Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Albanian *wānti, a participle in * -nti[1], or from *wānā, reflecting Proto-Indo-European *u̯en 'to lack, be empty; to strive, to wish for, to love'. Compare Ancient Greek εὖνις (eûnis, stolen; looted, lack, be short of), Armenian unain (empty, bare, lacking), Latin vanus (bare, lacking, empty, void, vacant), Old Norse vanr (lacking).
