From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *wewer-, from *wer-. Baltic cognates include Latvian vāvere, Old Prussian weware and the Samogitian dialect's vuoverie. Other Indo-European cognates include Latin vīverra (ferret) and Polish wiewiórka.
