Etymology[edit]
From Old Swedish vaktare, væktare, from Middle Low German wechter or German Wächter, equivalent to vakta + -are. Cognate with Norwegian Bokmål vekter and Norwegian Nynorsk vektar, see also Swedish vakt (“guard”).
